Society’s pressing need for finding and implementing renewable sources of energy for a sustainable future and protection from natural hazards presents new challenges and goals for the geosciences. Our teaching mission at the Institute for Geology, Mineralogy and Geophysics (IGMG) at the Ruhr University Bochum centers on studying processes in the integrated Earth system. We train new geoscientists by first building a holistic, broad foundation in the geosciences in the Bachelor study program that allows students to choose a customized specialization in the Master’s program to prepare them for the job market, or further academic study in a PhD program.
