The working group 'Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics' presented its work at the 15th International ISRM Congress in Salzburg

Every four years, leading experts in the field of rock mechanics and rock engineering gather at the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM) Congress. This year the congress took place in Salzburg from October 09th to 14th  2023 and coincided with the annual Geotechnical Colloquium.

The working group 'Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics' of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum was represented at the 15th International ISRM Congress 2023 & 72nd Geomechanics Colloquium with a total of six papers. The topics of the presentations include rock mechanics, stress field modelling, energy storage, computer-aided interface mapping and university education.

Alber, Michael; Alejano, Leandro; Backers, Tobias: How to form competent Rock Engineers.

Backers, Tobias; Kattenbeck, Simon; Duda, Mandy: The Hoek-Brown stress-depth relation revisited.

Bücken, Daniel; Backers, Tobias: Hybrid CO2 based thermo-mechanical underground energy storage - a numerical geomechanical review.

Godlewska, Julia C.; Ogan, Marc S.; Gallas, Julia; Schumski, Sarah; Duda, Mandy; Backers, Tobias: Comparison between manual and automated determination of discontinuity orientations in different rock mass types.

Neumann, Katharina; Duda, Mandy; Backers, Tobias: Effect of cyclic thermal loading on a carbonate rock: implications for thermal energy storage.

Witte, Lucas; Duda, Mandy, Aydin, Murat; Asghari Chehreh, Hossein; Backers, Tobias: Geomechanical characterization of two granites to establish an experimentally based benchmark for numerical simulation - a laboratory study.

Michael Alber, Tobias Backers, Daniel Bücken, Katharina Neumann and Julia Godlewska presented the results of the studies in oral presentations, Lucas Witte presented his results on a poster.

Our participation at the 15th International ISRM Congress in Salzburg and the 72nd Geomechanics Colloquium was a great success. The presentations and discussions expanded our knowledge and provided us with valuable insights. Many thanks to the ISRM and the organizing committee for this great opportunity to present our research.
